I had been to the Oasis for short term
trips years ago, but in the spring of 2012 I was able to bring my wife and four
kids there as well. We were only there for one day – and it was within
hours of flying across the ocean to Vienna. It had been a long day and
our four kids (17, 15, 12, and 7) were exhausted and understandably cranky.
We were planning to help out with
the Oasis Coffee house that night, but by late afternoon, we didn't think our
kids would make it. However they pushed through and got a major second
wind. They were timid at first, but they jumped right in laughing and
playing with these young refugee men from the other side of the world. My
wife and I also got involved.
The whole evening was quite moving
for us – not simply because of our kids involvement – but because these young
refugee men touched our hearts through their smiles and laughter, but also
touched our hearts with the sadness of their reality.
We spent two and a half weeks
touring Europe, but our first night at the Oasis was the most meaningful and
the most memorable.
